Canada is home to internationally recognized universities and colleges with high-tech
facilities and safe campuses. Tuition and living expenses are very affordable. Canadian
educational institutions welcome international students. Many provide special services
for international students, designed to assist them to integrate into the academic
community and to help them throughout their stay.
A Study visa is required for students who wish to attend educational courses in
Canada. However, not everyone needs a study permit to study in Canada. For short
term courses (six months or less) no Study Visa is required.
Foreign students must meet certain requirements when applying for study permits.
Officers look at many factors before deciding whether an applicant qualifies for
a study permit.
It is expected that a student applying for Study Visa knows anyone of the two Canada’s
official languages to follow courses lectures and reading assignments. Some post-secondary
schools might ask the student to take the language test. They may charge a fee for
it, which a student will have to pay.
Applicant is required to present a letter of acceptance from the educational institution
where he or she intends to study and has sufficient funds to pay for the tuition
and living costs. In some cases, an applicant may be asked to undergo medical test.
Study visas issued are valid for the duration of the intended course of studies.
However, international students studying in Montreal or another city in the Province
of Quebec must renew their status each year.
In addition, you must satisfy the officer that:
- You are not inadmissible to Canada.
- You will leave Canada at the end of the period
that you are allowed to stay.
- If you are applying to study in Quebec, you will
also need a Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (Quebec Certificate of Acceptance,
or CAQ) issued by the Ministère des Relations avec les citoyens et de l'Immigration
(MRCI).
International students can work in Canada but in limited situations, such as:
Employment on-campus;
The Student is given a scholarship;
The work has been certified as an integral part of the study program;
The work consists of academic research or post-doctoral fellowship;
The work takes place after graduation in a field related to the program of study.
