Non immigrant or temporary visas are for people with permanent residence outside the U.S. but who wish to be in the U.S. on a temporary basis – for tourism, medical treatment, business, temporary work or study.

The period of time that a non-immigrant visa is valid varies anywhere for 30 days to 10 years. Visas may be limited to a single entry or may be valid for multiple entries during the period of their validity. Upon arrival in the U.S., non-immigrants (Other than Canadian visitors) usually receive white or green cards (referred to as “I-94” forms) which are stapled into their passports by U.S. Immigration Inspectors. The I-94 forms reflect a date by which the person is required to depart the U.S.

It is important to note that only the form I-94 determines a nonimmigrant’s status and it’s validity as to time and purpose. If a non-immigrant card visa holder is present in the U.S. past that period of time, he or she is “out of status” and risks being deported or barred from further entry in to the United States.
