Every year more than 35 million people visit Canada. Most of these visitors are tourists, students or temporary workers. To enter Canada, all visitors, except those exempt by regulation, must obtain a Temporary Resident Visa, also referred as Visitors Visa.

A Visitor visa is a document issued by Immigration Canada which shows that a foreign individual has satisfied the Canadian visa requirements for admission as a visitor at the time of application.

The Canadian visitor visa application is a two step process, which begins with the submission at the consular office abroad. The applicant must demonstrate visa officer that they have the significant family, social, economic and cultural ties to their country of origin and they have sufficient funds to support themselves during their visit to Canada. Applicant must also assure visa officers that he or she has no intention to overextend their stay and shall leave the country before the visa validity period expires.

Once the visa is issued, the applicant will proceed to the second stage, which takes place at the POE (Port Of Entry), as a valid Visitors Visa in no means guarantees an access into Canada. An immigration officer at the POE will decide if the visitor still meets the requirements for admission when they arrive. If there has been a change in circumstances between the date of application and the arrival in Canada or if subsequent information is given which was not originally available to the visa office, the visitor may be refused entry.

A Visitor visa may be issued for single entry or multiple entries. Single entry visitor visas allow entry to Canada only once. Multiple entry visitor visas allow entry to Canada from any country on repeated occasions. These entries should occur prior to the expiry of visitor status.

Generally, tourists are admitted for a period of no longer than six months. Temporary foreign workers and international students are admitted for varying period of time, as determined on a case-by-case basis.
